The Spark of The Keykeeper’s Awakening: How It All Began

Updated: May 15

Hey there, Wayfarers!

I’m back with another peek into the heart of The Keykeeper Saga, and this time, we’re going right to the start—The Keykeeper’s Awakening, the first book that launched Alice, Leo, and the Tavern of Realms into the multiverse. If you’re a fantasy fan who loves epic journeys, found families, and a bit of quirky humor, this one’s for you. Grab a mug of Ivor’s pepper-scented stew (or at least imagine it!), and let’s step through the portal to where it all began.

The Keykeeper’s Awakening kicks off with Alice, a single mom and barista, juggling rent and coffee orders on Earth. She’s just trying to get through her last shift when a mysterious stranger hands her a magical Key, and—bam!—she and her seven-year-old son Leo are whisked to the Tavern of Realms, a sanctuary connecting countless worlds. Suddenly, Alice is the Keykeeper, tasked with guarding the multiverse, and she’s got to figure it out fast because the Riftmaker is tearing reality apart. From Astraelion’s starry wonder to Veynthar’s scorching deserts, Alice and Leo face cosmic dangers with a crew that becomes family: Ivor, the orc chef with a ladle that’s half weapon, half cooking tool; Nerissa, the elven bartender with a sharp wit; and later, allies like Ravyn and Selina, whose starlight magic saves the day. It’s a story of courage, love, and fighting to restore harmony in a fractured multiverse, all while Alice protects Leo and learns to wield the Key’s power.

Writing The Keykeeper’s Awakening was like opening a portal of my own. The idea came from my daughter Tereza’s endless curiosity—she’d ask things like, “What if a mom had to save the world with a magic key?” That sparked Alice’s journey, a mom who trades coffee cups for cosmic battles, proving you don’t need to be a Chosen One to be a hero. The Tavern of Realms became the saga’s heart, with its oak-paneled warmth, glowing lanterns, and spider-bots that Leo builds in later books (you’ll see more of those in The Collector’s Hunt!). I loved crafting realms like Astraelion, where the skies shimmer with cosmic wonder, and Veynthar, where the desert sands hide ancient secrets—and rift-born threats. One of my favorite moments is when Ivor uses his ladle to fend off a shadowy intruder, shouting, “No one messes with my kitchen!” It’s that mix of heart and humor that I poured into every page.

This book sets the stage for the saga’s stakes—like the Riftmaker’s chaos, which Alice battles to save the multiverse, and the found-family bonds that carry into The Collector’s Hunt. In that later book, set three years after the Riftmaker War, Alice faces Glacidia’s icy storms and the Collector’s schemes, with Leo’s spider-bots stealing the show. But The Keykeeper’s Awakening is where you’ll see Alice’s first steps, Leo’s wide-eyed wonder at the Tavern, and the crew’s early days of fighting rifts together. It’s the perfect start for anyone craving a magical adventure with a big heart.

The multiverse is waiting, and I’m so glad you’re here for the journey.
